You Tube: The Hungry Mind: The Origins of Curiosity
Susan Engel’s Blog: Young Minds/Psychology Today
The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will host nationally known Williams College educator and developmental psychologist Susan Engel PhD in a special event based on her New York Times best- selling book The Hungry Mind. Curiosity plays a vital role in preparing young minds for a lifetime of engaged learning. But what begins as a robust trait becomes more fragile over time, and is shaped by experiences with parents, teachers, peers, and the learning environment. How can parents and teachers support this critical 21st century skill?
In this fascinating discussion Engel will talk about what the influences that can encourage or stifle intellectual explorations like schedule demands, and adult expectations. Participants will learn practical strategies to foster and reward inquiry and to create environments where curiosity is nurtured, allowing our children to learn easily, creatively, happily, and successfully. Engel is the author of four books including Red Flags or Red Herrings: Predicting Who Your Child Will Become. CPDUs are available.
Engel is a highly regarded developmental psychologist and the director of the Program in Teaching at Williams College in Williamstown, MA.
