Why Is It So Hard to Talk to Your Teen?

So often as parents, we long to connect with our children, to share wisdom or inspiration – and too often, our best intentions are met with stone-cold resistance. What happened?! It’s not you – It’s them! Because of their neurological and developmental need to figure out who they are as an individual at the onset of adolescence, breaking down communication is often a first step in this process – just when kids need the most guidance. There’s only one thing to do – it’s time to learn a new language and a new approach!

Author Michele Icard joins us with a model for overcoming your language obstacles. Based on her most recent book, Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen, Icard will guide parents of tweens and teens past their fears and challenges around covering “the important stuff” with their kids and into a confident enough position to have meaningful conversations where their kids will actually engage.  In addition to learning general “Dos and Don’ts” for communicating successfully with increasingly resistant adolescents, Michelle will get into the specifics of what parents need to know on certain hot topics. While the book covers fourteen topics, this talk includes these five from the book:  Becoming Independent, Keeping Creativity Alive, Taking Care of Yourself, Living with Technology, and Helping Others. This talk is appropriate for parents and educators of children ages 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17.

Michelle Icard is a speaker, author, and educator who helps kids, parents, and teachers navigate the complicated social world of adolescence. Her first book, Middle School Makeover: Improving the Way You and Your Child Experience the Middle School Years, is a primer for the social and emotional changes parents and kids navigate when mid-life meets middle school under one roof. Icard is a member of the TODAY Show parenting team and NBC News Learn. Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, CNN, Time, and People Magazine. Her middle school leadership programs, Athena’s Path and Hero’s Pursuit, have been implemented at schools across the country, and she speaks around the globe at schools and parenting events.
