Healthy development in the early years (particularly birth to three) provides the building blocks for future learning capacity, behaviors, and physical and mental health, Educators and parents alike seek learning experiences that will bring meaning, motivation and engagement to young children. Holding high expectations for the children and their abilities, as well as affirming the strengths and cultures of their families, will important results. Research professor Dr Iruka Ihoma comes to GPS to discuss the “4Es” of culturally responsive family-engagement that parents and early childhood professionals should engage in to support children’s’ learning, development, and well-being for this generation and generations to come.

Iruka will be in conversation with Michaeleen Doucleff, a global health correspondent for National Public Radio’s Science Desk and author of the bestseller “Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans.”

Iruka is a research professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a fellow at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute and the founding director of the Equity Research Action Coalition at UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. She also serves on the U.S. Census Bureau National Advisory Council.
