How does one of four brothers, raised in the same home by loving and supportive parents, end up addicted to drugs for over a decade while the other siblings followed a positive path to a healthy lifestyle without any substance use disorder issues? Speaker Stephen Hill places a great deal of emphasis on “prevention through protection,” and pinpoints potential threats and warning signs for parents to watch out for.
Like many others, Hill’s parents experienced isolation, as well as emotional and financial hardship. Members of their community, friends, and even family labeled their son with stigmas that made his attempts at recovery even more difficult. Stephen finally hit his rock bottom and entered his final treatment program in 2012. He ended up staying in this program for a full year. Slowly but surely, Stephen began to put his life back together. Family, friends, education, sports, health, wellness, and helping others became the top priorities in Stephen’s life.
After completing his first year of sobriety, Stephen was offered a full-time position to work at the same treatment program he had just gone through. He then returned to college, earned his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, and recently passed the New York bar exam. In May 2018, he published his memoir A Journey to Recovery which became a #1 New Release in Drug Dependency on Amazon. Stephen is now living out his passion to help others avoid the hardships that his family suffered by speaking to teens, parents, and teachers at schools and community events all over the country.
Two distinguished speakers, addiction psychologist Dr. Aaron Weiner, and clinical psychologist Dr. Doug Bolton, will continue this important conversation following Hill’s remarks. Glenbard social work staff school staff will share additional closing comments in the hope that participants will leave with a better understanding of how to prevent and treat a substance use disorder.
A Distinguished Panel with Dr. Aaron Weiner, Dr. Douglas Bolton and Glenbard School Staff will follow this Alcohol Awareness Month special presentation.
