In her book, Real American, Julie Lythcott-Haims talks about her journey from self-loathing to self-love as a Black and biracial woman living in predominantly white spaces. The only child of a marriage between an African-American father and a white British mother, Julie shows how microaggressions, discrimination, and outright racism can puncture a person’s inner life with a thousand sharp cuts. In sharing her path to self-acceptance, she also expresses the healing power of community in overcoming the hurtful isolation of being incessantly considered “the other.” Julie’s story is deeply personal, but its message is universal: people from marginalized communities will recognize echoes of their own experiences, and allies will learn how they can better show up, listen, and advocate for others.

Like her memoir, Julie’s insights will engage audiences in meaningful conversations about the consequences of injustice. Julie encourages listeners to look both inward and outward to effect real, lasting change. Julie will inspire listeners to be their most authentic and open-minded selves.

Julie is also the New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult which gave rise to a TED Talk that has more than 5 million views. Her most recent book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, is an inspirational work aiming to help humans lead a more authentic adulthood.

Julie is a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean, and holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. She serves on the board of Common Sense Media, and on the advisory board of LeanIn.Org, and she is a former board member at Foundation for a College Education, Global Citizen Year, The Writers Grotto, and Challenge Success. She volunteers with the hospital program No One Dies Alone. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner of over thirty years, their itinerant young adults, and her mother.
