The College Admission Process\Tips to Prepare for the New SAT and FAFSA Completion Assistance

Three special events on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Glenbard East, presented in English and Spanish.

FAFSA Workshop begins at 10:00 a.m. with programs following at 10:30

The New SAT College Admission Test: What You Need to Know will be presented from 10:30 a.m. to noon with Effi Rouse, K-12 director at College Board. The SAT has replaced the ACT as the college entrance exam to be given in the Glenbard schools and throughout Illinois. The SAT measures college and career readiness skills and is closely aligned to the high school curriculum. The SAT exam has undergone major changes, including what will be tested and how the exam will be scored. Juniors, sophomores and freshmen and their parents should attend to understand the revised SAT.

High school seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend the FAFSA financial aid completion workshop on Oct. 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Glenbard East’s computer lab. Families will receive one-on-one assistance filing the FAFSA financial aid form online from financial aid specialists at the Illinois Assistance Corps. Please bring the following necessary documentation: 2016 Federal tax returns, 2016 W2 forms and record of untaxed income and investment/asset /business value. Assistance will be available in Spanish and English. Note the earlier deadline for filing this year’s FAFSA.

CPDUs are available. Continental breakfast and childcare will be provided. Glenbard East is at 1014 S Main St. in Lombard.

El Proceso de Admisión para la Universidad/The College Admission Process

Como padres, podemos apoyar de mejor manera a nuestros estudiantes si estamos familiarizados con el proceso de admisión para la universidad que ellos deben seguir. Cuándo se debe aplicar, cuáles son las diferentes opciones de admisión y qué requiere la aplicación, son temas que se incluirán en esta presentación.

Ercilia Miranda-Jonas es representante de Illinois Student Assistance Commission o ISAC. Su función principal es aumentar el conocimiento de los estudiantes y de los padres sobre la planificación para los estudios superiores, así como sobre los programas de ayuda financiera que existen a nivel estatal y federal. Ercilia conoce bien los retos que los estudiantes y padres enfrentan al ser los primeros en considerar unos estudios superiores. Ercilia cuenta con una Licenciatura en Administración de Empresas de Northeastern Illinois University.

The College Admission Process
As parents, we can better support our students if we are familiar with the college admission process they need to follow. When should the students apply, what are the different admission options, and what goes into the application, are some of the topics that will be covered in this presentation.

Ercilia Miranda-Jonasis an Outreach Program Coordinator at the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). Her primary role is to raise awareness among students and parents about the college planning process, and about financial aid programs available at the federal and state levels. She understands the challenges of first generation and non-traditional students, as she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Northeastern Illinois University as an adult student.
