A Celebration of 50 Years of Women Athletics and Title IX

Tue, Mar 22, 2022 @ 7:00 pm CDT - 8:00 pm CDT

| Free

The Glenbard Parent Series in partnership with the Glenbard female coaching staff is delighted to commemorate the historic 50th anniversary of Title IX, the federal law passed in 1972 which provided for the removal of barriers for female student athletes.

It’s clear participation in sports plays a crucial role in developing leadership, confidence and team-building skills for men and women. Girls involved in athletics enjoy the benefits of improved health habits, and do better in school. To mark the special celebration, Jen Brooks the Athletic Director at Ursuline Academy will present The Power of Being the Only Woman in the Room”. Although Brooks experienced her fair share of discrimination, because of her work in the world of high school athletics, she was inspired to find her voice and help others find theirs.

Also joining us in conversation is Glenbard West alumna and Beach Volleyball Olympian Nancy Reno, a long time advocate and role model for female athletes and Glenbard East alumna Netherland Joiner, Long Jump/Sprinter at Illinois Wesleyan. This inspirational event will create awareness and conversation on being your authentic self and the importance of allyship as women take our rightful seat at the table.

In addition to work as an Athletic Director in St. Louis, MO, Jen Brooks, CMAA, serves on a number of athletic associations including: Gold Level Mentor in the WECOACH mentoring program, President of the Metro Women’s Athletic Association (2010-13), and mentor coordinator for the Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Nancy Reno

Nancy Reno was the US Champion in Beach Volleyball in 1992 and 1997 and played in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She lettered four years in volleyball at Stanford where she earned All-American honors and was selected as the school’s top Female Athlete. She won the bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships in Los Angeles, California, partnering Karolyn Kirby. The pair also won the tournament at the 1992 Olympics, at which beach volleyball was a demonstration sport. She attended Glenbard West High School, has worked as a firefighter in Colorado and now works as an emergency room nurse assisting with Covid-19 patients.

Nia Joiner

Dr. Netherland Joiner (Dr. N), has always enjoyed athletics, joining gymnastics at a young age and later turning to track and field as her preferred sport at Glenbard East.  At  age 18, however, she was involved in a T-bone car collision which left her unable to walk due to multiple hairline pelvic fractures. Luckily, with chiropractic, rehabilitative  exercises, and perseverance, she was able to continue to pursue her athletic career at Illinois Wesleyan University. During her time at IWU, she became a two-time NCAA 60-meter-dash champion and record holder, a contributor to an NCAA Team Championship, 12 Time All-American, and received other NCAA academic and athletic awards. Her injuries from the accident allowed her to experience the power of chiropractic first hand and confirmed her choice to become a chiropractor today where she practices in Elmhurst.

This event will be presented virtually.  The link to log in to this webinar from your computer, tablet or phone is https://glenbard.zoom.us/j/84761469035
