A college degree, an associate degree, or a special certification are just a few of the options students have after graduation. A panel of experts will discuss anticipated changes in the workforce over the next decade. They will share the most important skills to have in a fast-changing job market and how adolescents can best acquire those skills.

Topics to be discussed:

– Anticipated changes in the workforce over the next decade

Adaptable to changing workplace needs

Resourceful and able to apply those resources

Lifelong learner–new technology, new competencies, new skills.

 – The most important skills to have in a fast-changing job market

Current key skills include problem-solving, analytical skills, teamwork.

Foundational skills like communication, technology, ‘workplace’ skills are always in demand.

 – How adolescents can best acquire those skills

Experiential education–Informational interviews, job shadow experiences

Internship, volunteer experience or apprenticeship

– Top fields to find a job in right now or in the coming year

The Recovery Growth fields include healthcare, personal services, food industry

Moderating will be Dr. Paul L. Corona, Clinical Professor of Leadership in the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He helps leaders find true fulfillment (in addition to improving their performance). He previously held a variety of leadership roles in Fortune 500 corporations, a Big 4 accounting and consulting firm, and major research universities. As a Leading Global Coach award winner, Paul was considered for the first Thinkers50 Marshall Goldsmith Coaching & Mentoring Award (the Thinkers50 Awards have been called “the Oscars” of management thinking).

 

Presnell will complete the panel,and talk through the drivers of career choice, what employers look for in candidates, and the general trend towards skills based recruiting, and credentialing.

 

Kristine Fay

 

Panel members include Kristine Fay, dean of business and allied technology at College of DuPage and a leader on the Board of Directors for Innovation DuPage. During her tenure at College of DuPage, Fay taught marketing courses and worked to grow the college’s advisory councils, building g strong relationships with local business and industry professionals and securing employment pipelines.

 

 

 

Mark Presnell, PhD

Dr. Mark Presnell the Executive Director of the Northwestern Career Advancement Center at Northwestern University will complete the panel. Dr Presnell oversees a 20-person staff that forms the career advising, counseling and employer and strategic outreach teams at Northwestern Career Advancement (NCA),. He and his staff collaborate with 9 of the schools and colleges on campus to serve undergraduate and graduate students in all areas of career development, from the start of their time at Northwestern through graduation. Dr Presnell has also served as a director and career counselor/advisor for the career centers at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Virginia School of Architecture and the University of Kansas.
